Trenchless technology is a form of underground construction that requires the use of few or no trenches at surface or street level. It uses new techniques and equipment to install or replace underground infrastructure without causing disturbance to the ground above. The goal of trenchless technology is to avoid interfering with surface-level activities, including traffic, businesses, residential areas or people.

Large diameter tunnels such as those constructed by a tunnel boring machine(TBM), and drilling and blasting techniques are larger versions of subsurface construction. The difference between trenchless and other subsurface construction techniques depends upon the size of the passage under construction.
