Oil refinery is a key monitoring object for air pollution. Refinery sludge such as scum, oil sludge, tank bottom sludge produced in the oil refining process is very difficult to treat, these solid wastes contain various types of oily sludge and complex properties. Without a proper refinery sludge treatment method, it will accumulate and causes harm, or pollute water and the environment to cause secondary pollution.


Refinery sludge is classified as HW08 waste mineral oil hazardous waste. It is very necessary to treat the dehydrated oily sludge in a harmless manner to reduce hazardous waste treatment costs.


Difficulties in Refinery Sludge Treatment

Refinery oily sludge is essentially different from municipal sewage treatment plant sludge. From the perspective of safety and prevention of odor pollution, below are the difficulties in refinery sludge treatment:

1. Complex ingredients. Oily sludge contains a large amount of aged crude oil, waxes, asphaltenes, colloids, suspended solids, bacteria, salts, acid gases, corrosion products, etc., also including coagulant, corrosion inhibitor, scale inhibitor, and fungicide added in the production process. These agents enter the sludge tank along with oily sludge, and part of them are going into the sewage treatment system to form a vicious circle in the system.

2. Difficult to dehydrate. Oily sludge is a very stable suspension emulsion, which belongs to a multi-phase system and is fully emulsified with high viscosity and doesn't easy to be dehydrated.

3. Big smell. Oily sludge contains odorous pollutants such as sulfides, ammonia, mercaptans, sulfides, etc., which are easily dispersed during the treatment process and cause secondary pollution.

4. Contains flammable and explosive substances. A large number of volatile hydrocarbons in oily sludge are easy to mix with air to form explosive gases, so explosion protection needs to be considered when choosing the oily sludge treatment process.
